Chris Morris

Born in Newquay England, this 35 times capped Irish international, made his Celtic debut in a 4-0 away League victory at Morton on 8th of August 1987.

"Fast and thrustful" Chris Morris was a right-winger converted to marker at Hillsborough where he lived in the shadow of Mel Sterland.

He was wanted by Dundee United but signed for Celtic for £100,000 as Billy McNeill hustled to get a team together for the Centenary year.

He had a great first season and on February 13th 1988 the fans chanted the name of this man who claimed he was booed just warming up at Wednesday.

He looked the complete answer to the loss of Danny McGrain even as an auxiliary forward.

Jack Charlton picked him for the Irish Republic against Israel on November 10th 1987 (his Mother was from Monaghan Town) and at Parkhead he was one of the inspirations of the 1988 Double side.

Celtic Park was full and above capacity on 23rd April 1988 for the match versus Dundee, that might bring home the Centenary Year Championship. Chris obliged with a goal in three minutes.

As of 1988-89 his club form shaded even though he hit a first minute goal against Rangers from a free kick on January 3rd and won a second Scottish Cup medal in his 99th game for Celtic on May 20th 1989.

He had a fine 1990 World Cup for Ireland and was seen by millions on TV shakings hands with the Romanian players before the penalty shoot-out (25th June).

He hit something more like his initial form again in his final year at Parkhead. He was the plaintiff in a case of alleged blackmail heard in Glasgow Sheriff Court in March 1991. He signed a new contract in August 1992 but then went to Middlesbrough in exchange for Andy Payton.

Chris's 1993-94 season and his chances of playing in the USA 1994 World Cup ended in November 1993 with a serious cruciate knee ligament injury during the away leg of an Anglo-Italian Cup tie with Ascoli.
