Barney Cannon (Co. Donegal)

Buncrana boy Barney Cannon played a trial for Celtic versus Aston Villa in Birmingham on the 1st of March 1947 and was booked for the club the day after the death of Chairman Tom White.

Made his League debut against Hibernian at Easter Road on the 12th of April 1947, in a 2-0 defeat.

Barney was the sixth winger signed by Celtic during 1946-47 after Hugh Doherty and Tommy Hughes (both Dundalk), Ronnie Mitchell (Renfrew Waverly), Jackie Jordan (Queens Park) and Frank Quinn (Salcoats Victoria).

Outside-lefts were suddenly in plentiful supply at parkhead and he found himself competing for a big team game with Johnny Paton, Konrad Kapler and George Hazlett.

Barney's moment of glory lies with Derry City on April 16th 1949 when he played in the Irish Cup Final against Glentoran (Bertie Peacock, Danny Blanchflower) and scored a superb goal, Derry's third, in a 3-1 win. Soccer connoisseurs in the bars of the Walled City remembered his forty-yard run and raging shot with awe and gratitude long years after.

Barney played for Derry City at Parkhead on the 24th of April 1950.
